Red pandas live in the cool, wet mountain forests of the eastern Himalayas and southwest China: in Nepal, northeast India, Bhutan, northern Myanmar and the Chinese provinces of Sichuan and Yunnan, plus southern Tibet. They are found mostly at about 2,000–4,300 m (6,600–14,100 ft), in forests with a thick understory of bamboo.

Which countries do red pandas live in?

The red panda has a long, narrow range that follows the southern and eastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau. From west to east it includes:

CountryWhere red pandas live
NepalMid-hills and mountains, from the far west (Kalikot district) to the eastern border
IndiaSikkim, the Darjeeling hills of West Bengal and Arunachal Pradesh
BhutanTemperate forests across much of the country
MyanmarThe far north, in Kachin State
ChinaSouthern Tibet, Sichuan (including the Qionglai, Daxiangling, Xiaoxiangling and Liangshan mountains) and northwest Yunnan

The total area of suitable habitat is small. One estimate put the potential habitat at no more than about 47,000 km² (18,000 sq mi), roughly the size of Slovakia, and much of that is broken into separate patches.

What kind of forest do red pandas need?

Red pandas live in temperate forest, not tropical jungle. Depending on the area and altitude, the trees include oak, maple, birch, fir, hemlock and rhododendron, often hung with moss and lichens. The climate is cool all year, with heavy monsoon rain in summer and frost and snow in winter.

The most important feature is bamboo. Red pandas need a dense bamboo understory, because bamboo leaves and shoots are their main food (see what do red pandas eat?). Studies across the range show they also favor:

  • Steep slopes, often more than 20 degrees
  • Water nearby, usually within a few hundred meters
  • Fallen logs and tree stumps, which act as feeding platforms and paths through the bamboo
  • Dense canopy cover of mature trees, which provides shelter and resting places

Forests that are logged, heavily grazed or crossed by many roads lose these features, and red pandas tend to disappear from them.

How high up do red pandas live?

Most records come from about 2,000–4,300 m (6,600–14,100 ft) above sea level, with the exact band depending on the region and the local forest. Below this zone, the forest is too warm and is often cleared for farming. Above it, trees give way to alpine scrub and meadows with no bamboo.

Red pandas move up and down the slopes with the seasons to some extent, following fresh shoots and ripening fruit. Climate change may push their favored forest higher up the mountains, where less land is available.

Life in the trees

Red pandas are arboreal, meaning they spend much of their time in trees. They sleep and rest on high branches or in tree hollows, often stretched along a branch in warm weather or curled up with the tail over the face in cold weather. Females give birth in sheltered dens such as hollow trees, hollow logs, stumps or rock crevices lined with leaves and moss.

They are skilled climbers, with sharp, curved claws and very flexible ankles that let them come down trunks headfirst. On the ground they walk or trot through the bamboo to feed and to move between trees.

Home ranges

Red pandas live alone, and each one uses a home range that it marks with scent, urine and droppings. Home ranges are often around 1–2 km² (0.4–0.8 sq mi). In one radio-tracking study in eastern Nepal, males used a median of about 1.7 km² (0.7 sq mi) and females about 0.9 km² (0.4 sq mi). The same study found that females traveled roughly 400–850 m (1,300–2,800 ft) a day and males about 650–1,500 m (2,150–4,850 ft).

Home ranges get bigger where forest cover is low, because the animals must travel farther to find enough food, and they become less active where people, livestock and dogs disturb them.

Himalayan and Chinese red pandas

Red pandas are usually divided into two groups: the Himalayan red panda (Ailurus fulgens fulgens) in Nepal, India, Bhutan and southern Tibet, and the Chinese red panda (A. f. styani) in Sichuan, Yunnan, southeast Tibet and northern Myanmar.

A genetic study published in 2020 suggested these are two separate species that split about 250,000 years ago, perhaps when glaciers isolated them during the Ice Age. The study pointed to the Siang River, the upper course of the Brahmaputra in Arunachal Pradesh and southeast Tibet, as the dividing line. Chinese red pandas tend to be larger and darker, with a redder face and more strongly marked tail rings. Not all authorities have accepted the split yet.

Sharing the mountains with giant pandas

In Sichuan, red pandas live on the same mountains as the much larger giant panda. The two avoid competing directly: red pandas favor steep slopes with plenty of logs, stumps and shrubs, while giant pandas use gentler slopes. Many red pandas in China live inside giant panda reserves and benefit from their protection. Learn more in red panda vs giant panda.

Why their habitat is shrinking

Red panda habitat is threatened by logging, clearing for farms and settlements, firewood and bamboo collection, roads and livestock grazing in the forest. Because red pandas rarely cross open ground, these changes leave them stranded in small forest islands. Habitat loss is the main reason the species is listed as Endangered, as explained in are red pandas endangered?

Frequently asked questions

Do red pandas live in China?

Yes. Red pandas live in southwest China, in Sichuan, northwest Yunnan and southern Tibet. Chinese red pandas are sometimes treated as a separate subspecies or species, the Chinese red panda.

Do red pandas live in the rainforest?

Not in tropical rainforest. They live in cool, temperate mountain forests that are very wet, with heavy monsoon rain in summer and snow in winter, so the forests are often misty and mossy.

Do red pandas live in trees?

Yes, mostly. Red pandas sleep, rest and often feed in trees, using hollow trunks and branches as shelter, but they also come down to the ground to feed on bamboo and to travel.

Are there wild red pandas in Europe or America?

No. Wild red pandas live only in Asia. Many zoos in Europe and North America keep them as part of breeding programs, but none live wild there.

How high up do red pandas live?

Red pandas are usually found at about 2,000–4,300 m (6,600–14,100 ft) above sea level. They avoid hot lowlands and the treeless zone above the forest line.
