Box turtles live in the eastern and central United States and in Mexico. The eastern box turtle lives in moist woodland from southern Maine and Michigan to northern Florida and west to Kansas and Texas, while the ornate box turtle lives on the prairies and sandhills of the Great Plains. Most spend their lives in a very small area.

Eastern box turtle range

The eastern box turtle has the largest range of any box turtle. It occurs from southern Maine, the southern parts of New England and Michigan, through the Appalachians and the Ohio Valley, south to northern Florida and west to eastern Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. It once lived in southern Ontario, Canada, but has disappeared there.

In the north it is mostly a lowland animal, rarely found above about 300 m (1,000 ft). Farther south it climbs much higher, up to about 1,800 m (6,000 ft) in the southern Appalachians. It is still fairly common in parts of the Southeast but is uncommon or rare in the Great Lakes region and is a species of concern in several Midwestern and northeastern states.

The eastern box turtle is one subspecies of the common box turtle, Terrapene carolina. Other subspecies fill in the rest of the map:

Box turtleMain range
Eastern box turtle (T. c. carolina)Maine and Michigan south to northern Florida, west to Kansas and Texas
Three-toed box turtle (T. c. triunguis)Mississippi River Valley, from Missouri to Texas and east to Alabama
Gulf Coast box turtle (T. c. major)Florida Panhandle west along the Gulf Coast to eastern Texas
Florida box turtle (T. c. bauri)Peninsular Florida and the Florida Keys
Mexican and Yucatán box turtlesGulf Coast of Mexico and the Yucatán Peninsula
Ornate box turtle (T. ornata)Great Plains, from Wisconsin and Indiana to Colorado, south to Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and northern Mexico

Where two subspecies meet, turtles often interbreed and can be hard to assign to either form.

What habitat do box turtles need?

Eastern box turtles prefer deciduous or mixed forest with a moist, well-drained floor covered in leaf litter. Bottomland forest along streams is often better than dry ridges. They also use forest edges, old fields, pastures, marshy meadows and the banks of streams and ponds, especially in summer.

A good box turtle habitat offers a mix of things within a short walk:

  • Shade and moisture. Leaf litter, logs and damp soil help the turtle avoid drying out and overheating.
  • Sunny spots. Clearings and edges let it bask on cool mornings and give females open, loose soil for nests.
  • Food. Woods and meadows full of earthworms, slugs, insects, berries and mushrooms.
  • Water. Puddles, seeps and shallow streams where turtles soak during hot, dry spells.
  • Winter shelter. Loose soil, stump holes or mammal burrows where turtles can dig in for brumation, the winter dormancy described in Do turtles hibernate?

Box turtles also live in large suburban yards, parks and farmland, as long as there is enough cover and few busy roads.

Ornate box turtles of the plains

The ornate box turtle, Terrapene ornata, is the western cousin of the eastern box turtle. It lives in open grassland, prairie, sandhills and dry scrub rather than woods, and it is common in parts of Kansas and Nebraska, where it is the state reptile of Kansas. Its shell is flatter on top and dark brown with bold yellow lines radiating from each plate.

In summer, ornate box turtles shelter from the heat in burrows, often dug by themselves or by other animals, and they spend the winter underground below the frost line. The IUCN Red List classifies the species as Near Threatened, mainly because grassland has been plowed, fragmented and crossed by roads.

Two more box turtles live only in Mexico: the aquatic box turtle (Terrapene coahuila), which spends most of its time in shallow marshes and pools in the Cuatro Ciénegas basin of Coahuila, and the spotted box turtle (Terrapene nelsoni) of western Mexico.

How big is a box turtle’s home range?

Box turtles are homebodies. Most adults live within a home range often less than 230 m (750 ft) across, and the ranges of different turtles overlap freely because box turtles are not territorial. Many stay in the same patch of woods for decades; some marked turtles have been found in the same place after more than 30 years.

They have a strong homing instinct. When people pick up a box turtle and release it somewhere else, it often wanders widely, trying to get back, and its new range may be about three times larger than that of resident turtles. These long walks increase the chance of being hit by a car, so relocated turtles often die. This is one reason experts say a box turtle found in the wild should be left where it is.

Why are box turtles found on roads?

Box turtles cross roads because their home ranges, food and nesting areas are often split by them. Movement peaks after summer rain and in the nesting season, when females travel to find open soil for their eggs. Road deaths, mostly of adult females, are one of the main reasons box turtle populations are declining. The question Why do turtles cross roads? explains this behavior in more detail.

Where to see box turtles in the wild

The best places to look are mature deciduous woods with streams in the eastern states, in the early morning or just after a warm summer rain. Walk slowly and scan the leaf litter, because the patterned shell is well camouflaged. If you find one, watch from a short distance and take a photo; it may close up, a defense explained in Can box turtles close their shells?

Frequently asked questions

Do box turtles live in water?

Mostly not. North American box turtles are land turtles, although they soak in puddles, mud and shallow streams in hot weather. The exception is the aquatic box turtle of Coahuila, Mexico, which lives in shallow marshes and pools.

Are there box turtles in Canada?

Not anymore in the wild. The eastern box turtle once lived in southern Ontario but has disappeared from Canada. Its northern limit today is southern Maine, New England and Michigan.

Do box turtles live in Europe?

No. North American box turtles live only in the United States and Mexico, and Asian box turtles live in East and Southeast Asia. Europe's native freshwater turtle is the European pond turtle, a relative that has a weak hinge on its lower shell.

How far do box turtles travel?

Usually not far. Most spend their lives within a home range often less than 230 m (750 ft) across, and they rarely wander more than a couple of kilometers from it. Females may make longer trips to find nest sites.

Should I move a box turtle to a safer place?

No. Box turtles know their home range and usually try to walk back if moved, often crossing roads on the way. If a turtle is on a road and it is safe for you, move it across in the direction it was heading and leave it there.
