A giant oceanic manta ray usually measures 4–5 m (13–16 ft) from wingtip to wingtip and can reach about 7 m (23 ft), making it the largest ray on Earth. Big adults weigh well over a tonne, and the heaviest are estimated at 2–3 tonnes. The smaller reef manta usually spans 3–3.5 m (10–11.5 ft).

How wide can a giant manta ray get?

Manta rays are measured by their disc width, the distance from the tip of one pectoral fin, or “wing”, to the other. Because the body is so flat, this is the most practical and most reported measurement. In mantas the disc is roughly twice as wide as the body is long, not counting the tail.

Most adult giant manta rays seen by divers are about 4–5 m (13–16 ft) across. The largest reliably reported individuals reach about 7 m (23 ft), the figure most scientists use as the maximum. NOAA Fisheries gives a maximum of about 8 m (26 ft). Older accounts of giants 9 m (30 ft) wide exist, but none has been confirmed by a careful measurement.

Size also differs between the sexes. In giant mantas, females grow somewhat larger than males, and they mature at a bigger size: males at about 4 m (13 ft) and females at about 4–5 m (13–16 ft).

How much does a manta ray weigh?

Manta weights are hard to measure, because these huge, protected animals are almost never lifted out of the water. The few figures available suggest that large giant mantas weigh well over 1,000 kg (2,200 lb). NOAA gives a maximum weight of about 2,400 kg (5,300 lb), and some sources estimate up to about 3,000 kg (6,600 lb).

Much of this weight is muscle in the broad pectoral fins, which power the manta’s slow, flying swim and short bursts of speed of up to about 24 km/h (15 mph). The skeleton is made of light, flexible cartilage, not bone.

Reef mantas and the Atlantic manta

There are three manta species, and they differ in size:

SpeciesTypical disc widthMaximum disc width
Giant oceanic manta (Mobula birostris)4–5 m (13–16 ft)About 7 m (23 ft)
Atlantic manta (Mobula yarae)Not yet well knownAbout 5–6 m (16–20 ft)
Reef manta (Mobula alfredi)3–3.5 m (10–11.5 ft)About 5.5 m (18 ft)

The reef manta lives along coasts and reefs of the tropical Indian and Pacific Oceans, at well-known sites such as the Maldives, Hawaii, Indonesia and eastern Australia. The Atlantic manta, formally described in 2025, lives in the western Atlantic from the northeastern United States to Brazil, including the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean.

Young mantas of different species can be the same size, so divers usually tell them apart by color pattern rather than size: the giant manta has T-shaped white shoulder patches and a dark mouth, the reef manta Y-shaped patches and a pale mouth.

How big are baby manta rays?

Manta pups are huge at birth, because the mother carries a single pup, rarely two, for about a year and nourishes it with a milky fluid inside the uterus. A newborn giant manta measures roughly 1.1–1.4 m (3.6–4.6 ft) across, already wider than many adult stingrays.

Births at the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium in Japan have given rare exact figures for reef mantas. Pups born there measured about 1.6–1.9 m (5.2–6.2 ft) across and weighed about 42–70 kg (93–154 lb). Young mantas grow quickly at first, but they take many years to reach adult size, and females may not breed until they are around 8–10 years old or older.

How do mantas compare with other large rays?

Mantas are the largest of all rays by width and weight. Their closest relatives, the devil rays, are smaller: the largest, the giant devil ray (Mobula mobular) of the Mediterranean and eastern Atlantic, reaches at least 3.5 m (11.5 ft) across, and Munk’s devil ray only about 1.1 m (3.6 ft).

Among true stingrays, the biggest is the giant freshwater stingray of Southeast Asia, with a disc up to about 2.2 m (7.2 ft) wide. In 2022, one caught and released in the Mekong River in Cambodia weighed 300 kg (661 lb), a record for a strictly freshwater fish, but still only a fraction of the weight of a large manta. The southern stingray of the western Atlantic, which divers often meet in the Caribbean, reaches about 1.5 m (5 ft) across. More differences are in manta ray vs stingray.

Sawfishes, which are also rays, can be longer than mantas, with the largest exceeding 6 m (20 ft) including the toothed saw, but they are much narrower and lighter.

Manta rays vs whale sharks and other giants

AnimalTypical sizeMaximum size
Whale sharkAbout 8–12 m (26–39 ft) longAbout 18.8 m (62 ft) long
Basking sharkAbout 7–8.5 m (23–28 ft) longAbout 12 m (40 ft) long
Giant manta ray4–5 m (13–16 ft) wideAbout 7 m (23 ft) wide
Reef manta ray3–3.5 m (10–11.5 ft) wideAbout 5.5 m (18 ft) wide

Like the whale shark and the basking shark, the giant manta is a filter feeder, and all three are among the largest fish in the world. Eating plankton, which is abundant and easy to catch in bulk, lets these animals grow far larger than most predatory fish. The giant manta is not the longest of them, but its enormous wingspan makes it one of the most impressive animals a diver can meet.

Why are manta rays so big?

Large size has several advantages for a filter feeder that roams the open ocean. A big body can store more energy, which helps a manta travel long distances between scattered patches of plankton and dive deep in search of food. Size also protects adult mantas from most predators; only large sharks, orcas and false killer whales are known to attack them.

The price of growing so big is a slow life. Mantas take many years to mature and have only one pup every two to three years, which is why fishing has hit their populations so hard.

Frequently asked questions

What is the wingspan of a manta ray?

Giant oceanic manta rays usually measure 4–5 m (13–16 ft) from wingtip to wingtip, and the largest reach about 7 m (23 ft). Reef manta rays are smaller, usually 3–3.5 m (10–11.5 ft) across.

How much does a manta ray weigh?

Large giant mantas weigh well over 1,000 kg (2,200 lb). The heaviest are estimated at about 2,000–3,000 kg (4,400–6,600 lb), but few have ever been weighed.

What is the biggest manta ray ever recorded?

Scientists generally accept a maximum disc width of about 7 m (23 ft) for the giant oceanic manta. NOAA gives up to about 8 m (26 ft), and older reports of 9 m (30 ft) have never been confirmed.

Is a manta ray bigger than a whale shark?

No. A whale shark can grow to about 18 m (59 ft) long and weigh many tonnes, far heavier than any manta. The manta is the largest ray, while the whale shark is the largest of all fish.

How big is a baby manta ray?

Manta pups are born already large: a newborn giant manta is roughly 1.1–1.4 m (3.6–4.6 ft) across. Reef manta pups born in an aquarium in Japan measured up to about 1.9 m (6.2 ft) and weighed 42–70 kg (93–154 lb).
