Most adult gray wolves weigh 23–55 kg (50–120 lb), stand about 66–85 cm (26–33 in) tall at the shoulder and measure 105–160 cm (41–63 in) from nose to rump, plus a tail of 29–50 cm (11–20 in). Wolves in the far north are bigger than those in the south, and males are slightly larger than females.

How big is a gray wolf?

The gray wolf is the largest wild member of the dog family. A typical adult looks like a long-legged, deep-chested German shepherd with a broader head and bigger feet. Its thick winter coat can make it look even bigger than it really is.

MeasurementTypical range
Height at the shoulderAbout 66–85 cm (26–33 in)
Head and body length105–160 cm (41–63 in)
Tail length29–50 cm (11–20 in)
Weight of most adults23–55 kg (50–120 lb)
Average weight worldwideAbout 40 kg (88 lb)
Heaviest well-documented wolfAbout 79 kg (175 lb)

Wolves heavier than about 54 kg (119 lb) are uncommon anywhere, and most of those are big males from Alaska, Canada or Russia.

Why are some wolves bigger than others?

Wolf size follows a pattern called Bergmann’s rule: animals of the same species tend to be larger in colder climates, because a big body loses heat more slowly. The wolves of Alaska, northern Canada and Siberia are the heaviest, while wolves of India, the Arabian Peninsula and the Middle East are much smaller.

Wolf populationApproximate average weight
EuropeAbout 38 kg (85 lb)
North AmericaAbout 36 kg (79 lb)
India and ArabiaAbout 25 kg (55 lb)

There is a lot of variation within each region. In Yellowstone National Park, adult males often weigh around 45–60 kg (100–130 lb) and females around 36–50 kg (80–110 lb). The Mexican wolf of the US Southwest and Mexico, the smallest North American gray wolf, usually weighs only about 23–36 kg (50–80 lb). Wolves in southern Europe, such as Italy and Spain, are also on the smaller side, while wolves of northern Russia can be very large.

Weight also changes with the seasons and with hunting success. A wolf that has just gorged on a kill can be several kilograms heavier than the same wolf a few days later.

Are male wolves bigger than females?

Males are usually somewhat bigger, but the difference is modest compared with many other carnivores. In a given population, females typically weigh a few kilograms less than males, roughly 2–5 kg (5–10 lb) on average, and have narrower muzzles, thinner necks and less massive shoulders.

Wolf pups grow remarkably fast. They weigh only about 300–500 g (11–18 oz) at birth, can increase their weight nearly 30 times in their first four months, and are close to adult size by about a year old.

How big are wolves compared with dogs and coyotes?

Wolves are often compared with large dog breeds. A German shepherd usually weighs about 22–40 kg (50–90 lb), so it is similar in weight to a smaller wolf, but a wolf has longer legs, larger feet, a narrower chest and a bigger head. Some giant breeds, such as the Great Dane, the Irish wolfhound and some mastiffs, can be taller or heavier than a typical wolf.

Wolves are much bigger than coyotes. Most coyotes weigh 7–21 kg (15–46 lb) and stand roughly 40–56 cm (16–22 in) at the shoulder, so an average wolf is about twice as heavy. For more on telling them apart, see wolf vs coyote.

Coyote7–21 kg (15–46 lb)
Red fox2.2–14 kg (5–31 lb)

What was the largest wolf ever recorded?

The heaviest reliably weighed wild gray wolf was a male killed in east-central Alaska in 1939, which weighed about 79 kg (175 lb). A few other very large wolves of 70–77 kg (155–170 lb) have been recorded in Canada and Russia. These are exceptional individuals; most wolves in the same regions weigh much less.

Wolves are also long animals. From nose to tail tip, big males can reach about 2 m (6.6 ft), which is one reason they look so large in the field or in photographs.

Myths about giant wolves

Photos of “giant wolves” circulate widely online, but they are usually misleading. A wolf held close to the camera by a hunter, with the person standing behind it, can look enormous because of forced perspective. Thick winter fur also adds a lot of apparent bulk.

Claims of wild wolves weighing more than about 80 kg (175 lb) have never been verified. Even the extinct dire wolf, which lived in the Americas until roughly 10,000 years ago, was only about the size of the largest living gray wolves, though more heavily built with a stronger bite.

Size is not everything for a wolf. Its strength lies in endurance, teamwork and powerful jaws. To see how wolves use that size to hunt elk and moose, read what do wolves eat?, and to learn how many wolves work together, see how many wolves are in a pack?

Frequently asked questions

What is the biggest wolf ever recorded?

The heaviest well-documented wild gray wolf weighed about 79 kg (175 lb) and was killed in east-central Alaska in 1939. Reports of much heavier wild wolves have not been verified.

Are wolves bigger than German shepherds?

Usually, yes. A wolf has longer legs, bigger feet and a broader head than a German shepherd, and it typically stands a little taller at the shoulder, although the weights of large dogs and average wolves can overlap.

Are male wolves bigger than female wolves?

Yes, but not by much. Female wolves are usually a few kilograms lighter than males of the same population, with slightly narrower heads and less massive shoulders.

How big is a wolf compared to a human?

A wolf's back reaches about the height of an adult's hip or upper thigh, and its body from nose to tail tip is about 1.4–2 m (4.6–6.6 ft) long. Standing on its hind legs, a large wolf would be about as tall as many adults.

How big are wolf paws?

Wolf paws are large, often about 10–13 cm (4–5 in) long, with the front feet bigger than the hind feet. Their size spreads the wolf's weight and helps it travel over snow.

Were dire wolves bigger than gray wolves?

Dire wolves, which died out in the Americas around 10,000 years ago, were about the size of the largest living gray wolves but had heavier bodies and more powerful jaws. They were not the giant monsters often shown in films and television.
