Do Owls Attack People? Why Owls Swoop at Walkers and Joggers

Owls rarely attack people. When they do, it is almost always a parent owl defending its nest or newly fledged young, swooping at a walker, jogger or photographer who has come too close, usually at dusk or at night. Most strikes cause only scratches, but eye injuries are possible, so the safest approach is to give nesting owls plenty of space.

Why do owls attack people?
Nest defense is behind nearly every case. Owls protect their eggs, chicks and young fledglings fiercely, and to an owl a person walking beneath its nest tree looks much like any other large predator. The owl’s response is to dive from behind, strike with its feet, and fly off, sometimes repeating the attack several times.
The risk rises after the young leave the nest. Fledgling owls often spend days on low branches or even on the ground before they can fly well, and the parents stay close by. A person who walks up to a fluffy owlet sitting under a tree may be struck by an adult they never saw.
A smaller number of attacks involve owls that have lost their natural fear of people, for example birds that were hand-reared, escaped from captivity or regularly fed. These owls may approach people at any time of year.
Which owls are known to attack people?
Most of the world’s owls are too small, or too shy, to bother people. A few larger species are known for defending their nests boldly.
| Owl | Where | Typical season of attacks |
|---|---|---|
| Tawny owl | Europe, including Britain | Spring, when young leave the nest |
| Eurasian eagle-owl | Europe and Asia | Late winter to summer; also habituated birds |
| Great horned owl | North and Central America | Late winter and spring |
| Barred owl | North America | Spring and early summer |
| Ural owl | Northern and eastern Europe | Spring, near nests |
The tawny owl is the classic example in Britain. Its most famous victim was the wildlife photographer Eric Hosking, who lost his left eye to a tawny owl in 1937 while photographing at a nest in Wales. He later titled his autobiography An Eye for a Bird. Britain’s owl species are described in owls in the UK.
In North America, barred owls have made headlines by striking joggers in city parks, for example in Salem, Oregon, in 2015, where officials put up warning signs. Great horned owls nest very early in the year (see when do great horned owls nest?), so their defensive behavior can start in mid to late winter.
In 2022, a Eurasian eagle-owl in the Dutch town of Purmerend repeatedly swooped at and scratched residents over several months, until it was caught and taken into care. Its unusual boldness led some experts to suspect it had been raised by people.
When and where do owl attacks happen?
Owl attacks are concentrated in a short window each year, during the breeding season. Most happen:
- At dusk, at night or just before dawn, when owls are active.
- Within a few dozen meters of a nest tree or a spot where fledglings are perched.
- In parks, cemeteries, woodland paths and quiet suburbs where owls nest close to people.
- Over a period of a few weeks, ending once the young can fly and hunt.
Many victims never see the owl coming. Owls fly almost silently and usually strike from behind, so the first sign is often a thump on the head. People who run or walk the same route at the same time every evening are hit more often, which may be because the owl comes to see them as a regular intruder.
How dangerous are owl attacks?
The real risk is low. Owl attacks are uncommon, and most result in scratches or small puncture wounds to the scalp, ears or neck. The talons of large owls are sharp, though, and a strike to the face can damage an eye, which is why owls near nests deserve respect.
There are no reliable records of a healthy wild owl killing an adult person. By comparison, the far bigger danger in the relationship runs the other way: collisions with cars, poisoned rodents and habitat loss kill many owls every year.
Anyone who is injured by an owl should seek medical help. For a serious injury, call 911 in the US, 112 in the EU or 999 in the UK.
How to give owls space
The simplest way to avoid trouble is to avoid the owl:
- If you know of an active owl nest, keep well away from it, especially after dark, until the young are flying.
- If an owl starts swooping at you, leave the area calmly and take a different route for a few weeks.
- If you find a young owl on the ground or a low branch, do not pick it up or approach it. It is usually a healthy fledgling, and its parents are nearby.
- In parks with known problem owls, follow posted signs; local authorities sometimes close paths at dusk during the nesting season.
- Never feed wild owls, because owls that link people with food can become bold.
Wild owls are legally protected across Europe and North America. If an owl is repeatedly striking people, the right step is to contact the local wildlife agency or park authority.
Myths and facts
- Myth: owls attack people for no reason. Almost every case has a clear cause: a nearby nest, fledglings or a habituated bird.
- Myth: owls hunt people. Owls do not treat humans as prey. A strike is a warning to leave.
- Fact: owls can attack without warning. Their silent flight means people are often hit before they know an owl is there.
- Fact: the problem is temporary. Once the young are independent, usually within a few weeks, the attacks stop.
Frequently asked questions
Can an owl seriously hurt a person?
Serious injuries are rare. Most owl strikes cause scratches or small cuts to the scalp, neck or face from the talons. Eye injuries are the main concern; the bird photographer Eric Hosking lost an eye to a tawny owl in 1937.
Why would an owl attack me?
Almost always because you are near its nest or its recently fledged young. The owl treats a person as a predator and tries to drive them away. A few attacks involve owls that have lost their fear of people, for example after being hand-fed.
What time of year do owls attack people?
Most incidents happen in the breeding season, when owls have eggs, chicks or fledglings. For great horned owls that can be from January to May; for tawny owls in Britain it is mainly April to June.
Do owls attack dogs?
Large owls sometimes swoop at dogs near their nests, and great horned owls and eagle-owls are strong enough to kill very small dogs, though this is rare. Keeping small pets indoors or close by at night near known nests reduces the chance of an encounter.
Is it illegal to harm an owl that attacks you?
Wild owls are legally protected across Europe and North America, including under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act in the United States and the Wildlife and Countryside Act in Britain. Problem owls are handled by wildlife authorities; the public should simply avoid the area.
