Can a Snake Eat a Human? Pythons, Anacondas and Real Cases

Yes, a few of the very largest snakes can eat a human, but it is extremely rare. Nearly all confirmed cases involve reticulated pythons 5 to 7 m (16 to 23 ft) long in rural Indonesia. There is no verified case of an anaconda or a Burmese python eating a person, and most giant snakes avoid people altogether.

Which snakes are big enough?
Snakes swallow their prey whole, so only a snake with a very large body and an enormous gape could manage an adult person. Just a few living species reach that size:
| Snake | Where it lives | Largest reliable size | Confirmed cases of eating people |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reticulated python | South and Southeast Asia | 6.95 m (22 ft 10 in), wild | Yes, rare |
| Green anaconda | Northern South America | About 6.3 m (20 ft); close to 100 kg (220 lb) | None verified |
| Burmese python | Southeast Asia; invasive in Florida | 5.79 m (19 ft), wild | None verified |
| African rock pythons | Sub-Saharan Africa | About 6 m (20 ft) | Very few, poorly documented |
The reticulated python stands out because it combines great length, a taste for large mammals and a range shared with millions of people. Our ranking of the largest snakes explains how these giants compare.
The documented cases
Large reticulated pythons regularly eat wild pigs and deer weighing 50 kg (110 lb) or more, and they can swallow prey up to about their own weight. An adult person falls within that range. Historical records of people killed by pythons in Indonesia go back centuries, but many old reports cannot be checked.
The first fully confirmed modern case came in March 2017, when a 25-year-old farmer in West Sulawesi, Indonesia, went missing while working in a palm plantation. Villagers found a python about 7 m (23 ft) long nearby and recovered his body from it, and the event was documented with photographs and video. Similar deaths have been reported since, including a woman on Muna Island in 2018, a rubber tapper in Jambi, Sumatra, in 2022, and several people in Sulawesi in 2024 and 2025.
The cases share a pattern. They happen in rural areas, often to people working alone in gardens, plantations or forest edges at night or at dusk, which is when pythons hunt. Researchers have also studied the Agta, hunter-gatherers in the Philippines who live closely with reticulated pythons. A 2011 study recorded six deaths from python attacks among them over about 40 years, and many other Agta had survived attacks.
Why it is so rare
Even for a giant snake, a person is a difficult meal. The biggest obstacle is the shoulders. A snake swallows head first, and the broad, rigid shoulders of an adult are hard to fit through even a very wide gape. There are reports of pythons killing a person and then giving up on swallowing, which suggests that many attempts fail.
Other reasons keep the risk low:
- Humans are not normal prey. Pythons hunt pigs, deer, monkeys and rodents, and most snakes treat people as a threat to avoid rather than as food.
- Very large snakes are rare. Only a small fraction of wild reticulated pythons reach 6 m (20 ft), and people kill many big snakes for their skins and meat.
- People are usually in groups. An adult walking with others, awake and moving, is far less vulnerable than a person alone and resting.

Anacondas and the movie myth
Films and adventure stories have made the green anaconda the classic “man-eating” snake. In reality there is no verified evidence of a green anaconda eating a person. The species is certainly strong enough to overpower one, and local legends are common, but the largest females live in remote flooded forests and grasslands where people are few.
Reports of anacondas 12 m (40 ft) long that swallow canoeists also have no physical evidence behind them. The heaviest anaconda reliably measured in the field was a female of 5.21 m (17 ft 1 in) and 97.5 kg (215 lb).
Burmese pythons and pets
The Burmese python is a giant too, with wild snakes in Florida measured at up to 5.79 m (19 ft). Yet there is no confirmed case of a wild Burmese python killing a person in Florida, where tens of thousands of these snakes now live.
A small number of deaths worldwide have involved large captive pythons, both Burmese and reticulated, that constricted their keepers or children in homes. These are cases of constriction rather than of a snake eating someone, and they are another reason why giant constrictors are not suitable animals for a house.
Staying safe around large snakes
The real risk from snakes comes from venomous species, which cause tens of thousands of deaths a year, mostly in South Asia and Africa. Giant constrictors are a tiny part of that picture.
If you see a large python in the wild, keep well back, do not try to touch, catch or move it, and let it leave on its own. If someone is attacked or seriously bitten, seek emergency medical help immediately, by calling 911 in the US, 112 in the EU or 999 in the UK, or the local emergency number.
Frequently asked questions
Has an anaconda ever eaten a human?
There is no verified case of a green anaconda eating a person. Stories and legends are common in South America, but none has been confirmed with physical evidence, partly because the biggest anacondas live in remote swamps far from towns.
Which snake has eaten humans?
The reticulated python of Southeast Asia is the only snake with fully confirmed, photographed cases of swallowing adult people. The first fully documented case was in Sulawesi, Indonesia, in 2017, and several more have been reported there and in Sumatra since.
Can a Burmese python eat a person?
There is no confirmed case of a Burmese python eating a person, in Asia or in Florida. A few deaths have involved captive pet pythons constricting people, but a full-grown human is far larger than the prey Burmese pythons normally take.
How big does a snake need to be to eat a human?
Confirmed cases involve reticulated pythons of roughly 5 to 7 m (16 to 23 ft). Smaller snakes simply cannot open their jaws wide enough or overpower an adult, and even very large snakes have trouble getting past a person's shoulders.
How common are python attacks on people?
Fatal attacks are very rare. Reported cases worldwide number only a handful per year at most, almost all in rural parts of Indonesia, compared with tens of thousands of deaths each year from venomous snakebites.
